In last week’s The Economist, the magazine focused on the year ahead, making predictions about what the tech and digital advertising industries will look like in 2012. While this may surprise the cynics among us, social media will become a more powerful vehicle as more people around the world share their information, likes and interests. The Economist predicts that sharing will be transformational to relationships on every level and will also begin to converge our virtual selves and real selves. It will also greatly influence us in many ways– personally, professionally and politically.
Mobile has been a catalyst for the growing importance of social media. Almost 2 in 5 social media users access social sites through mobile phones, according to a recent Nielsen Poll. This proves the staying power of social media, as well as the impact that mobile has had on other digital platforms (namely, email and social media).
While, we’ll have to wait to see what 2012 has in store for us, there’s no doubt that it will continue to prove how technology is bringing people together in new ways.
