An email trend for 2010

Now is the time of the year when a lot of people make predictions for the year ahead. Our prediction is that email marketing will be one of the most quickly discussed topics.
In his latest ClickZ article, Ed Henrich discusses what he believes the marketing outlook for 2010 will be (from an email marketer’s perspective). HisĀ top points, in our opinion?
- The triumph of the bar code: Henrich states that customers will increasingly use email on smart phones to present coupons, check in at the airport, etc. We think so, too.
- Social and email together: While we don’t agree with Henrich’s categorization of social media as strictly a direct marketing channel, we do agree that the teams who understand email marketing will be well equipped to execute social networks. Because data shows that the first step for any marketer looking to go in this direction is to build trust through email (only 12% of consumers are willing to share social networking info, while 96% are willing to share email), if a smart email marketing department can forge successful relationships with consumers via email, they’ve already laid the groundwork for social. (Whether those same folks can update Twitter accounts in a pithy and original manner may need to be another line on the job description, though.)
