Here are the top 50 advertisers by media value in January 2008. The University of Phoenix tops the list – another proof point that bears testimony to just how fast the online lead generation market is growing. Go down the list of the top 50 advertisers – you will see a large number of companies that deploy online banners for the express purpose of lead generation.

The biggest problem of course is that average online click-throughs are 0.10% and even the better performing offers convert at 10%. With these huge kind of drop-offs the banner-landing page method for lead generation is highly cost inefficient. And when I say “highly”, I mean HIGHLY.

Something has got to give.
