Lead generation through social networking applications

Marketing Sherpa has an excellent case study on how World Vital Records, a genealogical services firm attracted over a million users through Facebook.

What’s really notable about this case study is the following:

1. Social marketing is not just a dynamic world of ever evolving buzzwords that can be approached in a state of chaos. The marketing fundamentals still need to remain strong.

2. Social networking is not the domain of the young and the “wishing we were young” demographic. Older professionals are increasingly taking on to social networking sites in droves (my father added me as a Friend on Facebook yesterday – I guess I now have a parent that I can relate to as a friend.)

3. Offer something worthwhile to users – no amount of spin is going to help.

4. Keep it simple. ADD rules over social networking pages with an iron hand.

5. Monetize your efforts: Facebook actually pays application developers all of the advertising revenue generated off pages related to their applications.

Enjoy.
